Vermillion by John Steins is the result of a multifaceted process by which the artist applies a layer of gesso on heavy-weight watercolour paper. It is then gently folded and twisted to create a distressed and textured surface, before vermilion printing ink is rolled onto the paper in preparation for the etching press. The title reflects on this process as does the abstract composition, which is the culmination of traces left by the fortuitous folds and twists executed by the artist.
