The Australian-born, New York-based artist Virginia Cuppiadge created this limited edition print to fundraise for the Canadian tour of her 1998 exhibition, The Nature of Painting, that travelled to Whitehorse and beyond. Cuppaidge’s work is best described as immediate and colourful, an emotional approach that combines abstract forms with vibrant tonality. Exploring the notion of nature-as-cosmos, Cuppaidge’s work is informed by an urban mentality that privileges the visceral and dynamic quality of the outdoors over nature’s tranquility. Reductive yet expressive, Sunset in the City becomes the expression of energy and radiance of a city saturated by the setting sun.
