More Information
Howard Chandler Christy was an American painter and illustrator who began his career as an artist-reporter, accompanying the American troops to Cuba during the Spanish American War. Christy later illustrated magazine covers and stories, and taught at various art schools. From 1921 onwards, his focus shifted to painting society portraits, at which time he destroyed the majority of his earlier illustration work. Hotel Rialto is a rare surviving example of his illustration, which captured the bustling activity and transience of travelers following the height of the Klondike Gold Rush.
