Created for the Chilkoot Trail Artist Residency by Brooklyn-based artist, Hilary Lorenz, Chillinâ on the Chilkoot Trail is a box of one-of-a-kind, hand silk-screened bingo cards. The work is the result of a meticulous process that combines both analogue and digital methods. Each card is comprised of a variation of 24 individually printed wood and linoleum block prints illustrating Yukon animals and camping items. In order to achieve the unique combination of each card, the prints are photographed and transferred onto transparency film before individually silkscreened into the bingo cardâs grid. For the âfree spaceâ at the centre of each card, a rubber stamp depicting a gold nugget is pressed into embossing ink and then sprinkled with gold powder, creating a texturized, pronounced effect. Lorenzâs graphic imagery together with the late 19th-century-sourced fonts are emblematic of the trailâs historic significance in the 1897 Klondike Gold Rush. Played by fellow hikers at Sheep and Lindeman camps during the artistâs two-week long residency on the trail, Chillinâ on the Chilkoot Trail culminates as a relational artwork that relies on the active participation of bingo game players.
