The Northern Fibres Guild (NFG) is a cornerstone of the Yukon’s creative community, providing a nurturing environment for fibre arts enthusiasts to grow and thrive. Established in 1974 as the Whitehorse Weavers’ Guild, the organization was born from a shared desire to explore and celebrate fibre arts collectively. Today, the NFG remains a volunteer-driven organization dedicated to engaging Yukoners of all skill levels in a wide range of fibre arts disciplines.
Our members generate their materials for fibre work by gathering and preparing raw fibre, carding, spinning, and dyeing; produce unique textiles through processes such as knitting, weaving, and felting; and embellish and finish work with techniques such as sewing, needle felting, resist dyeing, and beading. While no individual masters every aspect of fibre art, the NFG serves as a vital forum for artists to exchange ideas, techniques, and inspiration.
As we mark our 50th anniversary, we reflect on our rich history of supporting members at every skill level and spreading our love for fibre arts. We take pride in celebrating our legacy of support and community building within the Yukon.
The “Climate Stripes Tapestry,” the highlight of our Threads of Change exhibit, showcases our collective creativity. Woven by members during our Jenni House Residency in July of 2024, this piece visually represents climate patterns and change in the Yukon over the past century, using texture and colour to tell its story. Additional works on display represent the breadth of talent and interests within our guild today.
We hope these pieces stimulate your own interest in the fibre arts and are always happy to welcome new members to our guild.
The exhibit closes January 17. Hours: Monday to Friday, 10am-5pm and during evening performances.
