Music is a lifelong journey for Lorène Charmetant – she is an accomplished musician and vocalist, and shares her knowledge teaching voice and piano lessons. She studied jazz at Conservatoire de Lyon, and after moving to Canada she obtained a certificate in jazz vocal interpretation and performance at Quebec’s Université de Sherbrooke. Lorène followed her creative spirit north and moved to the Yukon in 2017.
A culturally rich upbringing in France continues to influence her work – Lorène credits her exploration of influences across many genres to her early exposure to a broad variety of music. Lorène moves with ease between languages, communicating with clarity in both English and French.
Leaning into that broad range of influences, Lorène’s newest work has a noticeably new direction. Crisp yet rich vocals are punctuated by driving beats, incorporating a contemporary sound. A departure from jazz and other more traditional genres, Lorène’s new sound feels like a folk-pop masterpiece – the lyrics and their delivery feel timeless, while the musicality is tangibly current. Electronic elements are present in an effective but subtle way, serving and supporting the songs. Choral harmonies emphasize the strength in the vocals, as well as Lorène’s skills as a songwriter. There is a dreamlike quality to her slower ballads, and her lyrics feel like a letter to a friend.
