AUDITION NOTICE
The Hobbit

Adapted for the stage by Kim Selody
The Yukon Arts Centre invites performers to audition for The Hobbit, Kim Selody’s imaginative and ensemble-driven stage adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved tale. This production emphasizes storytelling, transformation, and collaboration as the company journeys from the Shire to the Lonely Mountain.
PRODUCTION OVERVIEW
This adaptation is designed for 10 versatile performers working as a highly collaborative ensemble.
• 8 performers will take on multiple named roles through character doubling.
• 2 performers will focus primarily on movement, puppetry, and ensemble storytelling, with opportunities for understudying and supporting principal roles as required.
All performers should be comfortable with physical storytelling, vocal transformation, and working fluidly within an ensemble.
The production will include light singing and group songs. Formal vocal training is not required, but performers should be comfortable singing as part of an ensemble.
ROLES AVAILABLE
Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf, Thorin, Balin, Bombur, Fili, Kili, Old Took, Elrond, Elven King, Bard, Smaug, Gollum, Goblins, Trolls, Spiders, Wood Elves, Eagles, Thrush, and other ensemble roles.
Casting will follow a character-doubling structure similar to the below (subject to adjustment during rehearsal):
• Actor 1: Old Took, Gollum, Lord Eagle, Thrush
• Actor 2: Gandalf, Smaug, Spider
• Actor 3: Bilbo
• Actor 4: Thorin
• Actor 5: Balin, Bert (Troll), Goblin General, Wood Elf Guard, Spider
• Actor 6: Bombur, William (Troll), Bard (Master Archer)
• Actor 7: Kili, Elrond, Wood Elf Guard, Goblin
• Actor 8: Fili, Tom (Troll), Elven King, Great Goblin, Elf
CASTING STATEMENT
All roles in The Hobbit are gender- and colour-blind. Casting will be based on the skills, abilities, and storytelling strengths of the performers, with an emphasis on versatility, imagination, and ensemble collaboration.
The Yukon Arts Centre is committed to inclusive and equitable casting practices and encourages performers of all backgrounds, identities, and lived experiences to audition.
ELIGIBILITY & AVAILABILITY
Performers must be 19 years of age or older at the time of audition.
Performers must be available for rehearsals on weeknights and weekends, as scheduled.
AUDITION DETAILS
Audition format:
• Short prepared monologue (2–3 minutes)
• Possible cold reading from the script
• Movement, vocal, or ensemble singing exploration may be requested
What to prepare:
• One monologue suitable for storytelling or heightened text
• Comfortable clothing for movement
Audition dates: April 17–18, 2026
Location: Old Fire Hall
REHEARSAL & PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE
Rehearsals begin: September 9, 2026
Performance run: October 14–18, 2026
Performances will take place at the Yukon Arts Centre Mainstage Theatre
COMPENSATION
Performers selected for The Hobbit will receive an honorarium for participating in rehearsals and performances. Details will be provided to selected artists.
