This triptych by Vuntut Gwitchin artist Shirlee Frost reflects the northern sky. Her palette of deep purples, blues, and twinkling crystals captures both the vast darkness of winter and the quiet brilliance of starlight overhead.

Frost shares: “This 2020 piece was created on black melton. seed beads and crystals adorn the star flowers and offshoots signifying new growth and ideas stemming forth. The colours feature both light and dark—the night sky accentuated by the twinkling of the stars. Created specifically for the Yukon Arts Centre where stars are born and stardom is possible. May we continue to nurture and encourage all stars to ‘shine your light.'”

This deeply personal and symbolic work is both a celebration of cosmic beauty and a tribute to the artists, performers, and community members who shine on the Yukon Arts Centre’s stage and beyond.

Shirlee Frost is a Vuntut Gwitchin artist, originally from Old Crow, Yukon. Known for her intricate beadwork, storytelling and dedication to cultural preservation, Frost draws inspiration from the land, sky, and stories of her people. In addition to her artistic practice, she is a respected Elder and community leader.
