This exhibition by Yukon artist Lillian Loponen is a multimedia exhibition that is an experiential interpretation of the Finland’s national epic of folklore, Kalevala, the Finnish cornerstone of its people. The exhibit will include writings by Chris Stephenson and a video by Justin Stephenson, with music by Shawn Stephenson.
Lillian was awarded an Advanced Artist Award to travel to Finland, her homeland of her ancestors, in July 2016 for six weeks at Koli Art residency in Northern Karelia of Eastern Finland to do research and visually interpret the magical symbolisms and legends of Kalevala.
Loponen, who has been in the Yukon since 1979, has work in private collections around the world, and in permanent art collections such as the Royal Collection of Drawings and Watercolours, Windsor Castle, Yukon Government Permanent Art Collection, Canada Games Centre in Whitehorse, Beringia Interpretive Centre, Keno City Mining Museum, and Crown Life.
The exhibit runs from September 5 to November 22, with the opening reception on Thursday, September 5 from 5:30pm-7:30 pm. Everyone is welcome. Appetizers and cocktails will be served.
