ADMISSION BY DONATION
We invite you to the opening reception of the group exhibition Untrue North, curated by Earl Miller.
The reception starts Thursday January 12 at 5:30pm. Curatorial talk and exhibition walk through by Earl Miller during the reception.
Featuring works by: Vikky Alexander, Marten Berkman, Martha Louise Black, Toni Hafkenscheid, Brian Jungen, Mark Lewis, Kevin Schmidt, Joseph Tisiga and Jin-me Yoon.
Untrue North depicts the romantic beauty of the North—for instance, photos of the Rocky Mountains. However, both subtle and overt allusions— to Romantic art and canonical landscape painting as well as to commercial nature photography, tourist postcards, various advertising media, and Hollywood film—show the romance of these landscapes to be more culturally constructed than actual. Accordingly, the exhibition asks whether the North can be truthfully represented in art, free of media and art historical mythology.
The exhibition runs from January 12 to March 10, 2012
