Lecture One- <span 12px;"="">The Knowledge of Suffering

“I had a stark choice: to exercise my freedom to become a bystander, or to commit my life to struggling for justice”

Payam Akhavan tells the story of how, in the 1970’s, his family was forced to flee from the Iran of Ayatollah Khomeini. It was a time when the world realised that “democracy” wouldn’t naturally take root everywhere. A story of an awakening to human rights, of friends and families broken and destroyed, of ideals crushed, and of the growing realisation he had, as a young man, that Canada offered the possibility to participate in the making of a better world.
