We invite you to attend the opening reception tonight at 5:30 and to view the exhibition of national youth artists, in the youth gallery,  Defining Moments.  Last summer, the Yukon Arts Centre Public Art Gallery sent Jessica Vellenga, Community Engagement for the Visual Arts to Toronto for training to facilitate workshops on Canadian identity for local youth.  Three workshops were held locally. The workshops were created TakingITGlobal, which aims to inspire and engage Canadian youth in their community.   Defining Moments: Discovering our Canadian Stories is a national digital media arts and citizenship project aimed at engaging youth across Canada to explore, express and showcase their divers perspectives on Canadian identity.

TakingITGlobal - a nonprofit based in Toronto, has been running Defining Moments since January 2011. With support from Canadian Heritage, TIG engaged youth in every province and territory to reflect on their identity on a national and local scale. Out of the 700 plus submissions the images in this room represent the jury selected artworks that are appearing in every province and territory in Canada.

The subject matter ranges from immigration, to sport, to native tradition as well as storytelling and mixed identities. Each artwork is accompanied by a statement to support the work and although this exhibit consists of reproductions there are 8 mediums represented.

Please add to the narrative by filling out a maple leaf with your personal defining moment and adding it to the tree. I also urge you all to vote on your favourite work. The ballots serve two purposes - to honour the artist who's artwork spoke to the public the most as well as, and less romantically, to gather demographic information so that projects like this can continue to happen in Canada.

For more information, check out their website, full of artist interviews and even though the contest is closed, we invite you to continue submitting work to our Global Gallery, to enrich and grow the national dialogue that has been sparked so far!
