The Yukon Arts Centre (YAC) is a not for profit charitable organization dedicated to the development of the arts as an important cultural, social and economic force in the Yukon. We intend to be model for the development of the arts in the North and a stimulus for a vibrant and creative territory. YAC is the territory's premier venue for performing and visual arts.
The 428 seat proscenium theatre boasts outstanding acoustics and top-of-the line technical support to provide an exceptional experience for performers and audiences alike.
YAC is increasingly a major presenter in Canada. The Art Lover's Series showcases some of the most rewarding performances from the national art scene, but we do not stop there. From hip-hop to dance, from cutting edge theatre to national and international headliners, each new season surpasses the previous one. We can't stop ourselves.
The 4,200 sq. ft. Public Art Gallery is the only A-Grade facility in the North. The Gallery hosts exhibitions all year long, and showcases northern, national and international artists. We bring up the best in contemporary art and bring out the best in Yukon art.
The Yukon Arts Centre is, above all, a creative partnership with all groups committed to art in all its forms, from exibiting and presenting to education, from plastic and visual arts to dance, drama and music of all genres. Consult our on-line calendar to see what is happening at the Yukon Arts Centre on any given night, on any given month. You'll be impressed. We are!
The Yukon Arts Centre is a community leader in arts education programming. Our children's programs, grouped under the umbrella "Kidz Art" serve youth and children of all ages throughout the Yukon. We also work actively with all Yukon schools to develop art education programs.
The Yukon Arts Centre works closely with community arts organizations, groups and artists for the development of the arts and of a cultural economy in the Yukon. This involves providing support for groups such as ArtsNet, Partners in Arts Education, Artspace North and Arts Underground.
The Yukon Arts Centre also administers Culture Quest, an art creation program funded by Yukon Tourism and Culture, the Cultural Industry Training Fund, and manages The Old Fire Hall, a multi-purpose venue in a renovated heritage building downtown Whitehorse.
The Yukon Arts Centre Corporation is governed by a Board of Directors. The board is a Policy Governance Board modeled after the writings of John and Miriam Carver. The board does not involve itself with the day-to-day operations of the centre, leaving this to the Chief Executive Officer. The board governs with an emphasis on strategic leadership and outward vision.
As directed by the Arts Centre Act the members of the board are appointed by the Minister, three of them chosen at the sole discretion of the Minister and the remainder of them chosen after consultation with groups promoting the fine arts in the Yukon with a view to achieving adequate representation of those groups and their audiences.
Board members are appointed for a term of three years and may be appointed for further terms. Any given board member may serve two consecutive terms but is not eligible for reappointment during the 12 months following expiration of the second term.
Board nomination forms are available at the following Government of Yukon link: Executive Council Office.
