The Persuasions
The Persuasions are one of the longest-lasting, most prolific a cappella groups around, and are universally hailed as the pioneers, champions and kings of the genre. Since their humble beginnings singing on street corners in Brooklyn, NY in 1961, they have gone on to inspire hundreds of imitators, record with countless award-winning artists and be featured in movie soundtracks.
The Persuasions are generally thought of as a "doo-wop" group, but in thruth they are much more. While a large percentage of their repertoire has indeed fallen under doo-wop, The Persuasions have shown that they are just as comfortable in contemporary, gospel, kid music, rock and even psychedelia, with covers ranging from Frank Zappa to The Grateful Dead, The Beatles and most recently U2.
As the L.A. weekly put it, they are to singing what Muhammad Ali was to boxing—invincible, innovative, original, beautiful. And the Persuasions continue to sing as if that's what they do instead of breathing.
